Hello friends,
I wanted to check in and explain where I’ve been. And I know, this update is long overdue.
When I started Crumbs, my intention was simple: to share what plant-based family life actually looks like in our home. Repeat meals. Recycled recipes. The systems that make feeding a family feel doable, not perfect. At the beginning, it felt enjoyable, and it was something that genuinely energized me amidst the chaos of everyday life with little ones.
Then fall arrived.
There were a lot of illnesses — the kids and me — along with a few stressful moments that took more out of us than expected. Somewhere along the way, trying to document what was “easy” started to make things feel… not so easy. Thinking about photos and writing while making dinner and holding a baby turned something practical into something heavy. (Turns out, not everything wants to be content.)
The truth is, I bit off more than I could chew. I’ve just been getting through the days, like many of you.
Even though I have recipes written and photos ready to share, I don’t currently have the capacity to show up consistently, answer questions, or engage the way I want to. Most of my energy goes into caring for my family and making sure everyone is fed. And surprisingly, that feels right for me right now.
So this is me saying I’m taking a break.
I don’t know how long it will be — maybe six months, maybe longer — but I’m stepping back for now. I even met with a phenomenal publisher about potential ideas for my third book, and for the first time, the excitement wasn’t there. That felt like a clear sign to pause.
To everyone who has written, checked in, or wondered where I’ve gone: thank you. Your kindness has meant a lot, even when I haven’t had the energy to respond.
I still care deeply about this work, and I’m leaving the door open to coming back when it feels manageable again. If I do, I hope you’ll still be here.
For now, all Rise Shine Cook and Crumbs recipes will be free. I’m slowly making my way through the posts and making them available to everyone.
Wishing you a steady start to the new year,
Ashley
PS: If you need me, I’m in the kitchen — probably making the same thing as last week.

I know how incredibly demanding recipe R&D , social media maintenance, etc. is, and coupled with parenting, it’s no wonder you’re taking a break. My kids are almost 30 years old, and if I had to push rewind, and had the good sense to do what you’re doing now in choosing your family, I would.
Not that you need anyone to affirm your choice, but anyone who is a super fan of you fully understands! BTW, my husband and I refer to you as “our girl Ashley” every time we discuss your cookbooks and recipes😍
Dear Ashley. I will miss you but look forward to when you do return. Your books are my favorites and your substack is my go to for recipes. Enjoy your family. ❤️
